How to Convert Excel to Google Slides (Charts Included)

Docslide turns the document you already wrote into a finished PowerPoint or Google Slides deck.

Google Slides cannot open an .xlsx file, so there is no direct Excel to Google Slides conversion. The manual route is three steps: upload the workbook to Google Drive, open it and choose File, Save as Google Sheets, then in Slides use Insert, Chart, From Sheets to pull in a chart you built in that Sheet. Linked charts show an Update button in Slides whenever the Sheet changes. To skip the rebuild entirely, a converter reads the .xlsx directly and produces the whole deck.

Everybody hits this the same way. The numbers are finished, the deadline is tomorrow, and you assume Slides will let you drop the spreadsheet in the way PowerPoint does with an embedded Excel object. It does not. Slides has no concept of an Excel file at all. Here is what actually works, what each method costs you, and which one to pick.

Can you import an Excel file into Google Slides?

No. Google Slides has no Excel import and no .xlsx support. Its data features only talk to Google Sheets. So every working method begins by getting your Excel data into a Google Sheet first, or by giving up on live data and pasting a static picture. There is no fourth option hiding in a menu.

That single fact explains a lot of frustration: people search for an import button, find nothing, and conclude they are missing a setting. The setting does not exist.

How do I convert Excel to Google Slides step by step?

  1. Upload the workbook to Google Drive. Drag the .xlsx into Drive. It uploads as an Excel file, which Drive can display but Slides still cannot use.
  2. Convert it to a Google Sheet. Open the file in Sheets, then choose File, Save as Google Sheets. This creates a separate Google Sheets copy. The original .xlsx stays put and the two do not stay in sync, which matters if you keep editing in Excel.
  3. Build the chart in Sheets. Select the range, then Insert, Chart. Style it here, not later. Charts imported into Slides are far easier to restyle at the source.
  4. Insert it into Slides. In your presentation choose Insert, Chart, From Sheets. Pick the spreadsheet, click Select, pick the chart, then Import.
  5. Decide on linking. The import dialog has a "Link to spreadsheet" checkbox, ticked by default. Leave it ticked and the chart shows an Update button in Slides whenever the Sheet data changes. Untick it and you get a static copy that will never move again.

Should I keep the chart linked to the spreadsheet?

Link it when the deck outlives the data: a monthly review, a dashboard readout, anything you will present again next cycle. One click on Update beats rebuilding four charts. Unlink it when the deck is going outside your organization, because a linked chart is a live pointer to a file the recipient may not be able to open, and because you usually want a board deck frozen at the numbers you actually presented.

One practical caution: sharing permissions travel with the link. If a colleague can open the deck but not the underlying Sheet, they will see the chart but hitting Update fails for them. Check that before a handoff.

What happens if I just paste from Excel into Slides?

You can copy a range in Excel and paste it into a slide. What lands is a static image or a plain unlinked table, depending on the paste. Text in a pasted table is editable, but the numbers have no relationship to your workbook, and the formatting rarely matches your theme. For a single small table under about five rows and four columns, this is genuinely fine and takes ten seconds. Beyond that it becomes a maintenance problem: every correction to a figure means redoing the paste and restyling it again.

Why does my chart look wrong after importing?

Three usual causes. First, the chart carries the Sheets theme rather than your Slides theme, so colors clash. Fix it in the Sheet and press Update rather than fighting it in Slides. Second, the chart arrives at the source aspect ratio and gets squeezed when you resize it, which crushes axis labels. Resize by dragging a corner handle and then reopen the chart in Sheets to adjust font sizes for presentation distance. Third, an eight-series chart that was readable in a spreadsheet is illegible on a projector. That is not a conversion bug, it is a design problem: a slide chart should carry one comparison, and the rest belongs in an appendix.

How do I turn a whole workbook into a presentation?

Here is where the manual route stops scaling. Insert Chart From Sheets gives you one chart on one otherwise blank slide. If your workbook has eleven tabs and the monthly review needs fourteen slides, you are still writing every headline, choosing every layout, and deciding what each chart means, for every slide, by hand.

Where should the numbers come from in the first place?

A related trap worth naming: a lot of monthly decks are built from a workbook that is itself a manual export from three other systems, so half the cycle time goes into assembling the spreadsheet rather than presenting it. If that is your situation, the leverage is upstream. Teams increasingly skip the export step and query the warehouse in plain English to produce the month's figures, then hand a single clean table to the deck-building step. Fixing the source removes both the copy-paste errors and the reconciliation argument that eats the first ten minutes of the meeting.

Common questions

Can I insert an Excel chart into Google Slides directly? No. The chart has to exist in a Google Sheet first. Insert, Chart, From Sheets only lists Google Sheets files.

Does converting to Google Sheets change my Excel file? No. Save as Google Sheets creates a separate copy. The original .xlsx is untouched and the two do not sync, so later edits in Excel require repeating the conversion.

Do Excel formulas survive the conversion? Most standard formulas convert cleanly. Pivot tables, macros, some conditional formatting, and a handful of newer Excel-only functions do not. Check any tab that drives a chart before you present from it.
