Anyone who has automated a document workflow in Microsoft 365 hits the same wall in the same order. Word is easy: Microsoft ships a connector with a Populate a Microsoft Word template action, you drop content controls into a .docx, and the flow fills them. Excel is easier still, because Microsoft Graph exposes a whole workbook API with worksheets, ranges, tables and charts. Then somebody asks for the same thing as a slide deck, you open the connector picker, type PowerPoint, and find that nothing there is published by Microsoft.

That is not a search problem. Microsoft does not publish a PowerPoint connector. What you find instead are third-party connectors from Encodian, Plumsail and Cloudmersive, each of which needs its own account and its own subscription. This piece prices them honestly, including where they are the correct purchase and we are not.

What each option actually costs

The trap in this category is comparing headline prices across different units. Encodian bills credits per operation. Plumsail bills documents. Microsoft bills seats, or bots if you go unattended. A deck is rarely one operation, so a plan sized in credits is smaller than it looks.

The question that actually decides this: does your deck structure change?

Everything above sorts cleanly once you answer one thing. Ask whether next quarter's deck has the same slides as this quarter's, with different numbers, or different slides.

If the slides are the same and only the values move, you want a populate connector. A placeholder template is a genuinely good fit for that job: it is fast, it is cheap at volume, and it is predictable. Buy Encodian or Plumsail, design the template once, and stop reading here. We would rather send you to the right tool than win a sale you will regret in four months.

If the slides are different, a template will fight you every cycle. This is the case people underestimate. A quarterly business review where one region blew up and needs three extra slides, an audit where the findings section is a different length every time, a research summary whose sections depend on what the research found: none of these can be expressed as placeholders, because the thing that changes is the structure, not the values. Teams build the flow anyway, then bolt conditionals onto it until somebody quietly reverts to making the deck by hand. That is the expensive failure mode, and it does not show up on a pricing page.

Why Microsoft leaves this gap open

It is tempting to read the missing connector as an oversight that will be fixed. The file formats suggest otherwise.

The Word populate mechanism works because Word has content controls, a placeholder primitive built into the document. Microsoft enumerates exactly which ones its connector supports, namely Plain Text, Combo Box, Drop-Down List, Image and Repeating Section, and which it does not, including Rich Text, Date Picker and Check Box. A .pptx has no equivalent. There is no named, typed, fillable region in the format for a connector to target, which is precisely why every third-party tool invents its own placeholder convention instead.

The Graph story points the same way, and it is the cleanest single fact in this whole area. Graph's file-conversion endpoint documents exactly three valid values for its format parameter: jpg, pdf and html. The supported-source list for pdf runs past thirty extensions and includes pptx, ppt, pps, ppsx and odp. So Microsoft Graph will read your PowerPoint and convert it to a PDF or a picture, and there is no documented way to make it produce a .pptx at all. Two constraints to check before you design the flow

The first is regional. If you work for a federal agency, a defense contractor, or anyone in a sovereign Microsoft cloud, check availability before you architect anything. Microsoft's connector reference lists the Encodian PowerPoint connector as available in all Power Automate regions except US Government (GCC High), US Department of Defense (DoD) and the China cloud operated by 21Vianet. In those tenants the third-party route is closed, not merely costly, which leaves desktop automation or a step that lives outside the connector catalog.

The second is a Microsoft limitation that catches teams doing this with Word and assuming PowerPoint would behave the same. The Word Online (Business) connector documentation states that when a multi-factor authentication conditional access policy is enabled, the Populate a Microsoft Word template action cannot be used. It also caps the input file at 10 MB and times out documents that take longer than two minutes to convert. Enterprise security posture and document automation collide more often than either team expects, so confirm your conditional access rules before you promise anyone a nightly deck.

What a sensible architecture looks like

The pattern that holds up over time is to stop asking the flow to do the part it is bad at. Power Automate is excellent at gathering data, routing approvals, watching a SharePoint library and writing a file somewhere. It is poor at design decisions, and building a deck is mostly design decisions.

So let the flow assemble the numbers and produce a document: the monthly workbook, the quarterly write-up, the report your analyst already finishes anyway. Then hand that finished artifact to whatever turns documents into decks. Before you commit to any of these, get answers to five things. They take an afternoon and they save a rebuild.

One: does your deck structure change between cycles, or only its values? This single answer sorts you into placeholder tools or document-to-deck tools. Two: how many operations, not documents, will a single deck consume? Multiply that by your monthly volume before you pick a credit tier. Three: which Microsoft cloud is your tenant in, and is the connector available there? Four: does the output need to be editable by the recipient, or is a PDF acceptable? If a PDF is fine, Graph already does that for free and you can stop. Five: who maintains the template when the deck changes, and do they have capacity? A populate connector transfers work from the person making the deck to the person maintaining the template, and that person is usually busier.

If the answers point at a fixed template and high volume, buy a connector. If they point at a document that reads differently every cycle, keep the flow for the data and move the deck-building out of it.
