ChatGPT for PowerPoint works on a Mac. OpenAI’s add-in listing in Microsoft Marketplace names PowerPoint 2016 or later on Mac, PowerPoint 2019 or later on Mac and PowerPoint on the web among its supported products. You install it from Home, then Add-ins, sign in with your ChatGPT account, and it runs in a sidebar. It is available on every ChatGPT plan, with limited usage on Free and Go. The limits that matter on a Mac are templates, fonts and charts, and usage that is metered per message.

Facts about the add-in are from OpenAI’s help center and its Microsoft Marketplace listing (version 2.0.0.1, updated September 16, 2026), read October 7, 2026. We make one of the alternatives covered below, so weigh our view accordingly; we say plainly where ChatGPT is the better choice.

Most people who search this have a Mac, a ChatGPT subscription and a deck due, and they have found tutorials recorded on Windows. Here is what is confirmed for the Mac, what the add-in will not do yet, what it costs once usage is metered, and when a different tool is the faster way to a finished deck.

Does ChatGPT for PowerPoint work on Mac?

Yes. The Marketplace listing for the ChatGPT add-in, published by OpenAI, lists PowerPoint 2016 or later on Mac and PowerPoint 2019 or later on Mac as supported products, next to the Windows builds and PowerPoint on the web. One add-in covers Excel, Word and PowerPoint, so installing it once puts ChatGPT in all three apps on your Mac.

If the desktop app gives you trouble, PowerPoint on the web is the fallback, and it is the same on a Mac as on any other computer. Open the deck from OneDrive in Safari or Chrome and add ChatGPT from the same Add-ins button.

How to install ChatGPT in PowerPoint on a Mac

  1. Open PowerPoint and go to the Home tab.
  2. Click Add-ins and search for ChatGPT.
  3. Add the one published by OpenAI, LLC. Several third-party add-ins use GPT in the name, so check the publisher.
  4. Open ChatGPT from the ribbon and sign in with the ChatGPT account that has access.

On a work Mac the Add-ins button may show nothing to install. OpenAI’s help center covers that case: when an organization cannot reach the Microsoft store for this add-in, a Microsoft 365 admin can deploy it from a manifest file in the admin center, under Integrated apps. If your company uses role-based access control, an admin may also need to enable the add-in for you. Send your IT team that article and save yourself an afternoon of reinstalling Office.

What ChatGPT for PowerPoint does well on a Mac

It works on the deck you have open. OpenAI describes four jobs: creating a first draft from source material, adding or revising slides in an existing deck, answering questions about a presentation’s story and structure, and improving a deck for a specific audience. Prompts such as “Add a risks slide after the market overview” or “Tighten this deck for an executive audience” are the sweet spot, because the add-in can read the slides around the change.

That editing loop is the reason to use it. If you already have a deck that is 80 percent right, an assistant in the sidebar beats any tool that generates a new file.

The limits you will hit

LimitWhat OpenAI saysWhat it means on a Mac
Templates and fontsComplex templates and custom font handling may not be supported yetBrand fonts installed on your Mac may not be applied; check every new slide against the master
Charts and shapesNative chart editing and deeper shape and formatting controls may not be supported yetPlan to finish charts by hand in PowerPoint

SkillsSkills from ChatGPT do not automatically carry over to the add-inSet up your deck workflow again inside the add-in
PrivacyMicrosoft may have the ability to read the content of your PowerPoint files under its add-in marketplace termsCheck with your client or compliance lead before using it on confidential decks

OpenAI also warns that ChatGPT “can make mistakes, including when editing or deleting presentation content” and suggests duplicating the file before important work. Take that literally. On a Mac, File, then Save a Copy, takes five seconds.

The Marketplace rating is a useful reality check: 3.3 out of 5 from 28 ratings on the day we read it. That is a young product, useful and unfinished.

What ChatGPT for PowerPoint costs

The add-in itself costs nothing to install, and the listing carries the note “Additional purchase may be required.” What you pay for is usage. OpenAI’s help center says Free and Go include limited usage, while Plus, Pro and Business are subject to the plan’s agentic usage limit. A typical task with GPT-5.5 may consume between 10 and 50 credits per message, and larger decks and multi-step edits use more.

For a team, ChatGPT Business was $20 per seat per month billed annually, or $25 month to month, when we read OpenAI’s pricing page on October 5, 2026. On Business, Enterprise and Edu, usage draws on a shared workspace credit pool once flexible pricing is in effect. The practical point: a heavy deck week from one person spends credits the rest of the team shares. If that worries you, our comparison of credit-based and flat-rate presentation software pricing shows how to estimate a month before you commit.

ChatGPT for PowerPoint alternatives on a Mac

Which alternative fits depends on what you are starting from.

DocSlideYes, in any browserA finished report as PDF or Word that has to become a deckSolo $30 a month or Team $89.50 a month, billed yearly, not metered

Copilot in PowerPoint is the natural choice inside a Microsoft 365 company, because it builds a presentation from a Word file and picks up the organization’s template when you start from it. It needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan plus the Copilot add-on. The head-to-head is on Copilot vs ChatGPT for PowerPoint.

Keynote gained an outline-to-slides feature with Apple Creator Studio in 2026. It builds a basic presentation from text you type or paste, and it stays in Keynote, which suits people who present from a Mac and never send a .pptx. We looked at the caps in Keynote AI and Apple Creator Studio pricing.

DocSlide starts from the other end. You upload a PDF or Word report, up to 20 MB, in Safari or Chrome, and get back a native .pptx of 6 to 14 slides with speaker notes, each slide shown beside the section of the document it came from. Nothing installs on the Mac, so there is no add-in for IT to approve. It does not edit an existing deck and it does not build chart objects; figures arrive as editable text. The Mac route is laid out on PDF to PowerPoint on Mac, and if you present from Keynote, on PDF to Keynote.

Which one should you use?

You have a deck and need it better by tomorrow. Use ChatGPT for PowerPoint. Duplicate the file, ask for a plan before large edits, and check fonts on the slides it touched.

You have a written report and no deck. A document-first tool is faster, because the structure already exists in your headings. An HR lead who set new pay bands in salary benchmarking software and wrote the compensation memo for the leadership team has the whole argument on paper; turning that memo into twelve slides is a conversion job, not a writing job. Then open the result in PowerPoint and use ChatGPT in the sidebar for the last round of edits. The two tools work well in that order.

ChatGPT gave you a broken file or the add-in will not load. The fixes, in order, are in ChatGPT PowerPoint not working. If the deck is due today, turn the ChatGPT text into PowerPoint slides by pasting it into DocSlide.

Your starting point is a Word outline and you want no AI at all. PowerPoint for Mac only imports outlines saved as .rtf or .txt, which trips up most people. The steps are in convert Word to PowerPoint on Mac.

The short version

ChatGPT for PowerPoint runs on a Mac in the desktop app and in the browser, on any ChatGPT plan, and it is strongest at editing a deck that already exists. Expect to fix templates, fonts and charts yourself, and watch the credits on a shared workspace. When the job is turning a finished document into a first deck, start with a tool built for that and bring ChatGPT in at the end.

Questions people ask

Is ChatGPT for PowerPoint free on Mac?

Installing the add-in costs nothing, and ChatGPT Free and Go accounts get limited usage. Plus, Pro and Business are subject to the plan’s agentic usage limit, and OpenAI says a typical task may consume 10 to 50 credits per message.

Do I need Microsoft 365 to use ChatGPT in PowerPoint on a Mac?

You need a PowerPoint version the add-in supports. The Marketplace listing names PowerPoint 2016 or later and PowerPoint 2019 or later on Mac, plus PowerPoint on the web. You sign in to the add-in with a ChatGPT account, not a Microsoft one.

Why is the ChatGPT add-in missing in PowerPoint for Mac?

On a work Mac the organization may block the add-in store. OpenAI’s help center says a Microsoft 365 admin can deploy the add-in from a manifest file under Integrated apps in the admin center, and may need to enable it under role-based access control.

Does the ChatGPT Mac app share chats with the PowerPoint add-in?

No. The Marketplace listing states that chats in the Microsoft add-ins operate separately from ChatGPT.com conversations, do not sync with chat history, and that memory is not available in the add-ins.
