NotebookLM to PowerPoint: How to Get Editable Slides Out of a NotebookLM Deck

Docslide turns the document you already wrote into a finished PowerPoint or Google Slides deck.

NotebookLM, now branded Gemini Notebook, does export to PowerPoint: the three dots menu on a generated Slide Deck offers "Download PDF Document (.pdf)" and "Download PowerPoint (.pptx)". The catch is what is inside that .pptx. Google describes the Slide Deck feature as powered by its Nano Banana Pro image model, so each slide is drawn as a picture rather than assembled from text boxes. The file opens in PowerPoint and almost nothing in it can be edited. Getting to a deck you can actually change means rebuilding the content, not re-exporting it.

This surprises people because the export button is right there and the file extension is correct. You download the .pptx, open it, go to fix a typo in a headline, and the entire slide selects as one object. There is no cursor, no text box, no chart. The February 2026 update that added per-slide editing and direct PPTX download improved the workflow inside NotebookLM, but it did not change the underlying construction: the visual layer and the content layer are the same layer.

Below is what Google actually documents about the feature, why the export behaves this way, and the three routes out of it.

Can you export NotebookLM to PowerPoint?

Yes. Generate a Slide Deck from the Studio panel, then use the three dots menu next to the finished deck. Google's Help Center lists the download options in exactly two forms: "Download PDF Document (.pdf)" and "Download PowerPoint (.pptx)". You can also rename, share, or delete the deck from the same menu. There is no Google Slides export and no PowerPoint add-in, so "NotebookLM PowerPoint integration" is a search term rather than a product feature.

A few documented constraints are worth knowing before you build a workflow on this:

  • You need edit access to the notebook to generate or delete a Slide Deck. View-only collaborators cannot.
  • Generation takes multiple minutes. Google says so plainly, and you can keep working in the notebook while it runs.
  • Revisions are quota-limited. Google states there are quota limits on the total number of slide decks you can revise, and that AI Ultra subscribers get longer decks with twice the limits.
  • Sources are not consulted during revisions. This is the one that catches people. When you ask for a change, the model is working from the deck, not from your documents, so a revision can drift away from the source material.
  • Google warns the output "may contain visual or factual inaccuracies." Treat a generated deck as a draft to verify, not a finished artifact.
  • The feature is limited to users over 18.

Why NotebookLM slides are not editable in PowerPoint

Because they were never text. Google's own announcement describes Slide Decks as running on Nano Banana Pro, an image generation model. The model composes a slide the way it would compose any other picture: the headline, the body copy, the icons, the chart, and the background are rendered together into a single flat raster.

Wrapping that render in a .pptx container produces a valid PowerPoint file, and PowerPoint opens it happily, but the file contains one picture per slide. Click a headline and you select the image. There is no shape tree to edit, no chart object holding data, no speaker notes field populated with anything. This is also why the text sometimes has the small rendering artifacts image models are known for: it was drawn, not typed.

The tell is instant. Open the deck, click any word, and look at the ribbon. If PowerPoint switches to the Picture Format tab instead of Shape Format, you have an image. That same one-second test works on any converted deck, which is why it is worth knowing whenever you convert a PDF to editable PowerPoint from any source.

How to convert NotebookLM slides to an editable PowerPoint

Three routes work, and they trade off very differently.

1. Rebuild from the source, not from the deck

This is the route that produces a genuinely native file, and it is also the least obvious, because it means ignoring the generated deck entirely.

NotebookLM is a research tool first. The valuable thing it produces is not the rendered slide, it is the synthesized written output: the briefing doc, the study guide, the summary, the answers with citations back to your sources. Export that written output rather than the picture deck, then convert the document into slides with something that builds native PowerPoint objects. You end up with real text boxes on master slides and, if your material contains tables, native chart objects that still hold the numbers.

The extra benefit is traceability. A rendered slide cannot tell you where a claim came from. A document-first conversion can put the supporting detail in speaker notes with a page reference, which matters a great deal when someone in the room asks where a figure came from.

2. Recover the text with OCR, then rebuild

If the notebook is gone or the deck is the only artifact you have, download the PDF version and run it through optical character recognition. OCR writes a text layer back over the rendered pages, and from there a converter has something to read.

Set expectations correctly. OCR on a clean, high-resolution AI-rendered slide recovers headline and body text well, because the type is crisp and evenly spaced. It does not recover chart data, because a chart in the render is a drawing of a chart with no numbers behind it. Anything you need to be able to correct later has to be retyped or rebuilt. And you will proofread: OCR engines confuse digits considerably more often than letters, so check every figure before the deck leaves your hands.

3. Accept it as a read-only handout

Sometimes this is the right answer and nobody says so. If the deck is a one-time internal summary that will be read rather than presented, edited, or defended, the rendered PDF is perfectly serviceable. It looks good, it was free, and it took four minutes. The problem only starts when a rendered deck becomes a recurring deliverable, or when it goes in front of an audience who will ask you to change something.

How do I get NotebookLM slides into Google Slides?

There is no direct export. Google Slides can open a .pptx, so you can upload the downloaded PowerPoint file to Drive and open it in Slides, but you will be looking at the same pictures in a different application. The images convert; the editability does not appear from nowhere.

The route that produces an editable Google Slides deck is the same as route one above: take the written output and build the deck from the document, exporting to Slides at the end. What NotebookLM's slide decks are genuinely good for

It would be unfair to describe this feature as broken. It is not a presentation builder that fails at editing; it is a visual summarizer that happens to output slide shapes, and judged that way it is impressive.

Google offers two formats, and the distinction is more useful than it first looks. A Detailed Deck is described as "a comprehensive deck with full text and details, perfect for emailing or reading on its own." Presenter Slides are "clean, visual slide decks with key talking points to support you while you speak." If you are going to use the output as-is, pick Detailed Deck for anything that gets sent and read, and Presenter Slides only when you will be standing in front of it. You can also set the output language and choose short, default, or long.

Where it shines is speed of comprehension. Point it at forty research PDFs, a folder of meeting notes, or a set of competitor materials, and you have a visual synthesis in minutes. For a market or competitive review that raw material is often gathered elsewhere first, from analyst reports, customer interviews, and whatever you can track about what is being said across the web and social platforms, and NotebookLM is a fast way to turn that pile into a coherent narrative. Just treat the rendered deck as the thinking, and build the deliverable separately.

Does NotebookLM replace PowerPoint?

No, and Google is not claiming it does. The Slide Deck feature has no template system, no way to apply your brand's master slides, no speaker notes tied to sources, and no editing model beyond prompting for a revision, which Google notes does not consult your sources anyway. It is a generation feature inside a research product.

The practical pattern that has emerged is a division of labor. Use NotebookLM for what it is unusually good at, which is reading a lot of material fast and producing a structured written synthesis with citations. Then convert that synthesis into a deck built from real objects, on your own template, with the detail parked in speaker notes. That way the AI does the reading and the drafting, and you keep a file you can still change at 8:55 for a nine o'clock meeting.

If your source material is scattered across formats, the same document-first approach applies whether you start from a PDF, a Word file, a written report, or text you paste in. And the numbers buried in your appendix tables can come back as native editable charts rather than another picture of a chart.

The short version: NotebookLM exports a PowerPoint file, not a PowerPoint deck. Know which one you actually need before you build a workflow on the download button.
